Pursuant to the decision of the University to implement the Semester System at The Under Graduate level, it was felt necessary to facilitate an easy reference containing in brief the essence of the framework of the Semester System as provided in the codified Ordinance and Regulations. With this intent, a salient features have been synthesized to cover important gamut of the rules which provides a readily succinct information of the Semester System.
In the Semester System, the course of study will be Honours Degree:
- BACHELOR OF ARTS (BA)
1) Admission Criteria (OC-8):
- Students who have passed plus 2 (10+2) in their respective stream or an equivalent examination from a recognized Board in India or abroad which is considered as equivalent by the University shall be eligible for admission into the First Semester of Honours Degree Course.
- Student who have passed plus (10+2) or an equivalent examination from any Stream
from a recognized Board in India/Abroad has the option to change to Arts Stream and the
students from the Science Stream has the option to change to Commerce Stream only.
2) Registration (RC-9):
A student shall be required to be registered under the University within the First Semester of his/her enrollment.
3) Transfer (RC-9):
No inter-college transfer among the Colleges shall be allowed beyond the First Semester Examinations. Other transfer be allowed only on merit of each case.
4) Change of Centre of Examination (RC-9):
- A students shall apply to the Controller of Examinations through the Principal of his/her college dully endorsed by the Principal of the Centre to which the change is being sought.
- A prescribed fee shall be deposited by NEHU Challan payable to North Eastern Hill University and the instrument of payment shall be attached to the application form.
- Change of Examination Centre is not permitted to a Centre/College to which the affiliation of the Subjects/Course has not been given by the University.
5) Duration of the Honours Degree level Examination (OC-8):
- The Honours Degree Course will comprise of 6 ( Six ) Semesters spread over 3 ( Three ) Academic Years.
- Semester means a half-yearly programme or term of studies.
- 1st ( First ), 3rd ( Third ) & 5th ( Fifth ) Semesters will be Odd Semester.
- 2nd ( Second ), 4th ( Fourth ) & 6th ( Sixth ) Semesters will be Even Semester.
6) Conduct of Examination (RC-9):
- At the end of each Semester, there shall be an examination as per the Semester Academic Calendar given below:
- Evaluation in each course shall be on the basis of performance through continous assessment and the end semester examinations. The weightage assigned to the continuous assessment and end semester examinations shall be in the ratio 1:3.
- The pattern and schedule of continuous assessment and evaluation thereof shall be such as laid down in the relavent Regulation.
8) Subject Combination (RC-12) :
The college at present offers Honours in three subjects only with the following subject combinations.
Honours in Subject Combination
GARO: History & Pol. Science.
PHILOSOPHY : (a) Elective Language (Garo / Assamese) (b) Political Science (c) History
{ Students have to opt any two from a,b or c }
POLITICAL SCIENCE : History & Economics.
9) Distribution of Papers / Marks :
Semester – wise, different Course Structure (OC-8, RC-12):
The distribution of Papers/Marks over six Semesters in respect of Honours Papers, Elective Combination Papers and other Compulsory Papers for Arts Stream shall be as laid down in the syllabi and as indicated in the following table:
Distribution of Marks:
In every semester, out of full marks 100 in all subjects, 25 marks is for internal Assessment and Term- end semester examination shall be of 75 marks only. For continous evaluation of students, the college shall conduct 2(Two) class tests carrying 15 marks in each subjects. There shall be a Home Assignment in all papers carrying 10 marks each. The marks secured in Home Assignment and the best marks of two tests shall be added with the marks of Term – end semester examination.
Attendance in class tests and submission of Home Assignment is mandatory. If a student fails to attend Internal Tests and fails to submit Home Assignment he/she will not be allowed to sit in the end semester examination.
10) Structure:
- Compulsory Subjects – English, Alternative English/MIL, Environmental Studies.
- Honours Elective Subjects – as listed in the Eligibility for Subjects Combination.
Elective Subjects – Two subject combination to be taken in addition to the Honours elective Subjects as listed in the eligibility for Subject Combination as reflected in (OC – 8, RC – 12)
11) Improvement facility:
- The improvement facility of an examination will be given to a desirous student after successful completion of the Honours Degree Course of Six Semesters on the recommendation of the college.
- The facility for improvement will be extended to a student securing less than 45% marks in any of the papers.
- No forfeiture condition shall be applied to the candidate.
- In case of improvement in the marks, the students will be required to surrender the Original Marksheet and the improved Mark Sheet shall be retained by the student.
- Student availing improvement facility shall not be eligible for ranking.
- Other details to be notified in due course.
12) Re-evaluation facility:
- A student who scores less than 15% marks in a paper shall not be eligible for re-evaluation facility.
- Re-evaluation facility is permissible for one paper only in a Semester.
- Re-evaluation facility is not applicable in respect of Practical Examinations
- The higher marks awarded post re-evaluation shall be awarded.
- A student who was declared passed initially shall not be declared unsuccessful as a result of re-evaluation and downward revision of marks shall be limited to pass level.
- A student may apply for re-evaluation within 30 days of declaration of the concerned results on payment of the prescribed fee to the Controller of Examinations.
13) Scrutiny of Answer Scripts (RC-9):
A student can apply for Scrutiny of their Answer Script(s) in any paper within 30 days of publication results on payment of prescribed fee.
